Nina Simone was a singer, songwriter, pianist, and civil rights activist who created urgent, emotional intensity by singing songs of love, protest, and black empowerment. This poster portrays the tension between the birds’ desire to fly and the hope she created through her music. The straight lines with lyrics from “Blackbird” wrap around Nina Simone’s pink gloves (which also symbolize herself as a bird) and flow out with the birds taking flight and lyrics from her most well-known song “Feeling Good” to represent her words having an impact on the euphoric feeling that comes with liberation from oppression.
